• Optimized shell volume: the lower shell volume in sizes M, L, XL and 2XL has been revised to make it approximately 3% wider for easier helmet fitting and removal; this increased volume has also improved impact management, now sitting 44% below the regular speed threshold.
• ECE 22.06 performance: for the new ECE 22.06 standard, the SM5 achieves an impact rating at regular speed 44% better than the current 33%, as well as a 32% better result in low-speed linear impact and 31% better in high-speed linear impact than the existing standard.
• Multi-density inner liner: ensures the right density in each area for better impact absorption.
• Redesigned chin bar profile: the base area has been specifically sculpted to create a raised relief section that clears the clavicle, with a new softer EPS liner that extends beyond the shell and is covered by a more flexible rubber compound, reducing the likelihood of clavicle injuries.
• Ventilation system: maximizes air circulation and heat exchange through multiple air intakes and exhaust ports.
• Contained weight: the ECE version of the SM5 helmet weighs 2.98 lb in size M, and 3.13 lb in the ECE DOT version with visor.
• Visor design: developed to direct air to the ports and enhance airflow.
• Available versions: the SM5 comes in 2 versions, ECE R 22.06 and ECE R 22.06/DOT.
• The interior and exterior surfaces are designed to minimize the effects of oblique impacts. To help combat and mitigate these rotational impact forces, Alpinestars has developed proprietary technology by creating a low-friction surface on the inside of the EPS liner. For the ECE 22.06 standard, which now includes rotational oblique impact rating, the SM5 scores 70% below the new regulation.
